Field of the Cloth of Gold

The Cloth of Gold Garden and Notre Dame de Calais

Tuesday 23rd June 2020

Lecturer: CAROLINE HOLMES

2020 is the 500th anniversary of The Field of the Cloth of Gold. This was the meeting between Henry VIII and Francis I of France near Calais. The setting was extravagant and the pageant lasted two and a half weeks.

Caroline Holmes is a gardening historian and gardening expert. She has written many books and is particularly interested in gardens of the Tudor era. She was commissioned to design the gardens of the only Tudor church in continental Europe, Notre Dame de Calais, which is near the site of The Cloth of Gold. The design illustrates many symbolic plantings which are related to the church building.
